Michael S. Liptak, age 84, know to many as Mickey, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday April 17, 2013 at Mercy Hospital. He underwent knee replacement surgery early in the day and suffered a massive heart attack several hours later. He was surrounded by his loving family at the time of his passing. Mickey was best known for being the Postmaster of Grindstone, Pa from 1961 to2001, where he served the public with a passion. Prior to his employment as Postmaster, he Worked in the Duquesne Steel Mill for 17 years. He was also a proud Veteran of the United States Navy. Mickey was more than the Postmaster; he was a story teller, friend and community leader. As a Postmaster, he was forbidden by law for running for Political office. However, Mickey was allowed to answer the call to community service by being appointed to office. Accordingly, The Frazier School Board appointed him numerous times as a replacement School Board Director during the 1980's and 1990's. Living in Grindstone his entire life, He was a founding Member of the Grindstone Volunteer Fire Department, serving as Chief for many years. In 1975 he had the vision and was the driving force behind the building of the current six bay multimillion dollar Fire station, which is still recognized and the most professional volunteer Fire Station Facility in Fayette County. Mickey also Proudly Chaired the Fayette County Fireman's Association as a Past President, where he had Life Emeritus Status. As Such, He was very proud to have fought many times to insure that all Fayette County Fireman were entitled to a Life insurance policy. Michael's interest in Community affairs never faltered. After his retirement he was finally allowed to run for Political office and has since been an Elected Fayette County Democratic Committee Man. Although, he lived in a small district, he was proud of "dragging as many people out to vote" as he possibility could. The St. Cecilia RC Church was also a major part of Michael's spiritual life, where he served on The Parish Council and as an Usher as long as anyone can remember. Yearly, he also answered the Bishop's call to serve on the Diocesan Lenten Appeal and many other fundraising activities, including serving in the Knights of Columbus. Remaining Active to the end, Mickey was scheduled to be honored this month as the Grindstone Lion's Club most Senior Active Member. He was also very proud to have served as President of the Fayette Federal Employees Credit Union for many years. While he was still active on the Credit Union Board, he stepped down as President when the small credit union reached his lifelong goal of Eight Million Dollars in assets. Coming from a man raised during the depression, and being able to remember picking coal from the slate dump for home heat. Mickey could hardly believe he successfully oversaw the Credit union's growth. Mickey also maintained active memberships in the American Legion Post , VFW Post 47, Brownsville Eagles, Elks Post 370 Uniontown, PA, California Gun Club, and was a voting member of the Colonial Joint Sewage authority of Redstone and Jefferson Twps. He still served as President of the Republic and Coal Hill Sportsman's Clubs. Which showed his unending dedication to his Beloved NFL Steeler's Football, as those clubs 60 plus members both attend an NFL Steeler's Away game each season. Mickey was proud to hold Eight Steeler's Season Tickets which he enjoyed entertaining his family and friends with. His favorite past time by far was traveling to home and away games with Family and Friends. Again, after being raised in the Great Depression, it thrilled him to be able to say he went to every Super Bowl the Steelers played in! When asked about organizing trips, Mickey would tell everyone he was the president of Liptak's Worldwide Travel and Limo Service. He was preceded in death by his Parents Michael and Katherine Rusinack Liptak, his loving sister Catherine Veach, his cherished son James Liptak, and an infant daughter Sharon Louise. He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years Sara Gilland Liptak. His daughter and husband Karen and Frank Angelilli, Son and wife Michael and Rosemary Liptak, Daughter in law, Terri Liptak , Son and wife Bernard and Cheryl Liptak, Son and wife Thomas and Lora Liptak, Daughter and partner Kathy Liptak and Dale Shawley, Daughter Patricia Liptak.
