Joseph “Joe” Edward Pecosh, Ph.D.
(October 19, 1936 – June 10, 2024)
Dr. Joseph Pecosh passed away June 10 after a long period of declining health; he was 87 years old. A lifelong resident of Brownsville, PA, he was born in nearby Edenborn, the youngest child of his late parents, John and Sophie Pecosh. Joe’s siblings—John, Michael, Mary, and Thomas—all preceded him in death, as did a son, Andrew Patrick Pecosh. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Patricia (Gates) Pecosh, two sons, Michael Pecosh and wife, Lindsay, of Bluffton, SC, Thomas “Dalton” Pecosh and wife, Laura, of Pittsburgh, and three beloved grandchildren: Isabelle, William, and Elliott.
Dr. Pecosh was professor emeritus of California University of PA in the department of Technology Education. He began his career as a teacher at Elizabeth Forward School District and then taught at California Area High School before joining the faculty of (then) California State College in 1967. He retired in 1999 from a career that he loved. Over the years, he served his community in many capacities, as a Hiller volunteer fireman, Brownsville Area School Board member, Brownsville Catholic School Board member, member of St. Mary of the Assumption Holy Name Society and Pastoral Council, member of The Partner Parishes of St. Mary and St. Peter Pastoral Council, and as a member of the Diocese of Greensburg Pastoral Council.
Joe was an animal lover, especially the dogs he owned over the years. Typical of his strong desire to avoid attention, he asked that notification of his passing not be published until after his private funeral, which was held on June 15, 2024, at the Historic Church of St. Peter in Brownsville. Dr. Pecosh was interred at Lafayette Memorial Park in Brier Hill, PA. Memorial donations in his honor may be made to the animal shelter of your choosing.
