Jerome Zalek Obituary

Jerome Mark Zalek        April 29, 1944 – February 5, 2025

It is with profound sadness and deep love that we share the passing of Jerome Mark Zalek, a man who lived his life with integrity, kindness, and an unshakable commitment to his family.    Jerome was a true blue-collar worker, dedicating his life to providing for his family. For many years, he worked in the coal mines, and later as a welder, with a tireless work ethic and a willingness to do whatever it took to support those he loved. He was a man who could fix anything—whether it was a broken car, a home project, or a neighbor’s problem, he was always there, ready to lend a hand. His generosity knew no bounds, and while he may not have had riches to give, he gave of his time and his heart freely.

Jerome was a man of few words, but those words were always honest, direct, and infused with the kind of wisdom that comes from living a life well-lived. He had a quick wit, a sharp sense of humor, and a playful, ornery spirit that made everyone around him smile. His humor was often the highlight of any conversation, and he had a gift for lightening the mood, even in difficult times.

Above all, Jerome believed in the importance of family. He was a loving husband to Shelley for 45 years, and together they shared 50 years of love, laughter, and unwavering support through every challenge life threw their way. Their bond was unbreakable, and their love a model for all who knew them.

The memories they made together—whether on a walk, in the kitchen, watching the Steelers, or just enjoying a quiet afternoon in the back yard—will be cherished forever.  Jerome’s recent passion was building his train layout in his basement, a labor of love that he spent countless hours perfecting. He was determined to create a magical space for his grandson and best friend, his namesake, to enjoy for years to come. The tracks were a symbol of the love and care he put into every part of his life.

Jerome may no longer be with us physically, but his spirit lives on in the hearts of everyone who knew him. He taught us all the importance of family, hard work, generosity, and, most importantly, finding humor in every situation. He is deeply missed, but we take comfort in the knowledge that his love for us will never fade, and that his memory will continue to light our way, just as he always did. He was one of a kind—there truly aren’t many like him.  His legacy will live on forever in the loved ones, the laughter, and lessons he left behind.

He is survived by his loving wife, Shelley Zalek; his brother, Walter Zalek; his daughters, Chris Ann Masciarelli (James), Cheryl Zalek, and Dr. Jessica Hott (Tyler); his grandchildren, James Masciarelli (Leeanna), Dylan McGrady (Mackenzie), Brynleigh Hott, and Jerry Hott; as well as his beloved great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Margorie Zalek; his brother, Richard Zalek; and his grandson, Donovan McGrady.

A special thank you to all who shared in his life, and to those who supported him and his family during his final days.

A celebration of Jerome’s life will be held on Sunday, February 9th, at Skirpan Funeral Home, 135 Park St., Brownsville, Pennsylvania, from1:00 PM until 5:00 PM.
