Gladys Sutherland Obituary

Gladys Marie Ebbert Sutherland, 92 of West Brownsville, PA passed away on Saturday, August 24, 2013. She was born October 12, 1920 in Ruffsdale, PA in Westmoreland County the daughter of the late Adolph A. Ebbert and Tirzah E. Kepple Ebbert. Gladys attended Brownsville High School where she was a member of Thespians, the Forensics Team and graduated with the Class of 1938. She graduated from California State Teacher's College where she was a member of the College Players and Alpha Psi Omega. Gladys was employed by the Brownsville Area School District where she taught First Grade at Prospect Street Elementary and then Cox-Donahey Elementary. She retired in 1982 after teaching for twenty-five years. Area residents may remember Gladys best for her theatrical performances in 65 productions with local theater companies including: Brownsville Civic Theater, Rankin Playhouse, Brownsville Summer Playhouse, Brier Hill Playhouse, Twin Coaches Dinner Theater, Washington Community Theater, Old Trail Players, State Music Hall, Actors and Artists, Valley Theater Company of California University, Shadyside Dinner Theater, Jonaleka Productions and American Performing Artists of Arlington Virginia. Besides her love for acting she enjoyed painting and sewing. Gladys will be sadly missed but lovingly remembered by survivors including: her sons, Brad (Terry) Sutherland of Arcadia, FL and Chris (Donna) Sutherland of Texarkana, TX; daughter-in-law, Colleen Sutherland of West Brownsville; 5 grandchildren: Corey Sutherland of West Brownsville, Lisa Vollmerhausen of Severn, MD, Amy Musser of Millersville, MD, Melissa Sutherland and her fiancé Christopher Thatch of Honolulu, HI and Molly Sutherland of Honolulu, HI; 4 great grandchildren: Tyler "Ty Ty" Sutherland, Jessica Knotts, Kayla Knotts, Jackson Warriner; sister-in-law, Jane Ebbert of Brownsville as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Arthur Sutherland, a stillborn son Bruce Jay Sutherland, son A.G. Sutherland and her beloved grandson Brandon Lee Sutherland, brothers: Donald H. Ebbert and Dewayne A. Ebbert, half-brother George Ebbert, half-sisters: Elizabeth Eicher and Virginia Newcomer. Friends will be received in The Skirpan Funeral Home 135 Park Street Brownsville, PA on Monday from 2:00PM until 9:00PM and on Tuesday from 10:00AM until 11:00 AM when a Funeral Service will be held with Rev. Chris Sutherland officiating. Interment will follow in LaFayette Memorial Park.
